Determining Your Needs for Web Design

September 12, 2011 - 5:26 am - Posted by admin

Before you run off and build a website, it is important to determine your needs first.  Don’t hire someone prior to sitting down and making a list of requirements for your online business.  Some of the things you should consider include the type of site you are going to build, who your customers and target audience are, and the functionality required throughout the site.  All of these factors will help you make a better decision on hiring a professional or if you can build the site on your own.

Building a website for a business depends on many factors.  When you sit down and make a list of the requirements your site should have, you will have a better understanding of how much money it will cost you if you hire someone.  There are many different types of sites.  The most common types of websites include retail sites that customers can by directly from or informational sites that businesses advertising their services  provide for informational purposes.  You must be able to categorize your business properly so you know the type of site you will have and the complexity required.

Another factor is who your target audience is going to be.  Determining your target audience will help you design your website.  For example, if you have a business offering information and access to a citizenship application or provide assistance with the US Green Card and USCIS, then you want the colors to be professional, which may be tan, greens, browns, and white.  You wouldn’t want to use primary colors and make the site look good for children.  It would be like designing a site selling men’s clothing in pink and purple.  Your audience makes a difference in the colors.  If a programmer is writing the code for your site, changing the colors could take days and be expensive.  Determine your design and colors up front and you won’t have any problems.  This helps by knowing your audience.

The functionality required on a site is very important.  Can the shoppers on your site actually perform a purchase transaction?  Do you want them too?  Do you have a form for customers to send you an email with questions and comments?  If so, the form should work.  If there are functionalities you want the customers to be able to perform, it is important to understand the complexity of making these things happen.  Some people have expectations for their website and do not understand the cost behind making it work.  Programmers can be expensive.  The more functionality and difficulty you want with your site, the more expensive it will be to build and maintain.

There are many considerations with a website before you run off and begin building one.  The most important factors to consider before you sign an agreement with a programmer or a professional include the type of site you want to build, the amount of functionality, and who your audience is going to be.  Always consider these things and have a good idea of how much money you are going to spend before you hire someone.
